Thinning

Thinning is one of the most important intermediate steps to managing your timber.  A professionally managed thinning will:
  • provide cash for trees that will die before maturity
  • remove inferior trees
  • stimulate the growth of the remaining higher quality trees
  • provide a positive cash flow
  • increase forage for wildlife
  • reduce the risk of pine beetles
Without a professional forester working for you, there is the risk of:
  • excessive damage to the remaining trees which can:
    • damage or kill the remaining trees
    • attract pine beetles
  • improper tree selection which results in a long term loss of revenue
  • excessive harvesting which results in a long term loss of revenue
  • lower than market returns
Thinning increases forage for wildlife
